VIDEO: Marc Silber’s Advancing Your Photography Show, “5 Composition Secrets with Huntington Witherill.”

Our new video is about mastering the art of visualization, and no one does it quite as uniquely as photographer Huntington Witherill. Witherill’s approach to composition is one he models after some of the greatest photographers of all time. He quotes Edward Weston when he describes visualization as “the strongest way of seeing.” As you’ll see in this video, his imaginative composition is inspired by photographer Minor White, who said “photograph things for what they are, and for what else they are.” This video is sure to get you creative composition juices flowing.

We took some notes for you on the video. Here are Witherill’s take-home composition tips:

• Visualization-What is your strongest way of seeing?
• Shoot from different angles
• Photograph subject for what it is, and what else it is
• Follow the storm clouds (Great cloud shots don’t happen by accident)
• Placement of camera is key (composition)
• Landscape composition- what is happening in the sky is as important as what is happening on the land
• Neutral density filters= gain more time (long exposure)
